The ARTillerie is pleased to present Arcenio Martin Campos, Alex Griffin and Asya Livshits in "First Encounters" group exhibition. Three artists explore different visions of landscape painting, ranging from traditional to abstract to surrealist. Landscape typically represents physical surrounding, an objective reality with identifiable natural characteristics - sky, trees, fields, buildings. But what happens when we are removed from a physical space and try to recall it? We are then left with an emotional connection, a projection of meaning, or an illusion. Sometimes we remember the people whom we encountered in those places, and sometimes we remember ourselves. The exhibition is curated by Maria V. Kraybill.
Arcenio Martin Campos began drawing on his own as a child, and between schools acquired much of his fine art education from independent study and private instruction. He attended New Mexico State University for studio arts, the University of New Mexico for art history, and received a Certificate of Painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In addition to being an accomplished painter and draftsman, Campos keeps a busy schedule teaching classes in cast drawing, giving lectures on anatomy, figure drawing, and painting in the United States (Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Fleisher Art Memorial, the Washington Studio School, the Wayne Art Center) and elsewhere around the world, including Spain, France, Iceland and New Zealand. His work has received numerous awards and has been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad. Campos is represented by multiple galleries worldwide, including the renowned Laurence Esnol gallery in Paris.
Alex Griffin creates his landscapes that move among the past, present and future. Taking on multiple roles of painter, historian and storyteller, he reconstructs realities by inviting the viewer into imaginary scenes - a field, an urban landscape, a quiet walkway. His paintings have a cinematic effect and are filled with dreamlike imagery and structure. He builds up the surfaces of his canvases with layers of narratives and surrealist images. Griffin received a BFA from the Virginia Commonwealth University in 2009. He participated in numerous exhibitions in the United States, including the latest 2019 Woodmere Annual Juried Exhibit at Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia, PA; Main Line Art Center, Haverford, PA: Perkins Center Annual Fall Show, Moorestown, NJ; The Saville Gallery, Cumberland, MD; "Reflective Pool," Cluster Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; Art Mora Summer Show, NJ.
Asya Livshits is a Philadelphia based painter, who was born in Ukraine, and was raised in the the Republic of Georgia. After moving to the United States, she received her MFA in Painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She completed an artist residency in Palazzo Rinaldi in Italy, and has continued to develop as an artist by taking private classes in landscape painting, printmaking and ceramics. Livshits enjoys painting en plein air when she travels. She also frequently recreates her landscapes from memory - places where she had lived as a child but has not since revisited. Livshits has had numerous solo shows within the United States and in Russia, and participated in many group shows, including Woodmere Art Museum and Abington Art Center. Her art work resides in many established private collections in the United States, Russia and France.
